FAQ
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
This is a good question and one that is complex from my point of view. There are a lot of coaches out there, as is the same with all professions. There are also many types of coaches. What I think is important when you are choosing your coach is you have a free consult with them to make sure you think you are fit and the coach thinks you are fit for them and they can help you. I tend to focus on working with people who have reached a life stage where they want to change their life, may know what they want but feel stuck or don’t know what they want but know what they do have needs change. People who have created a great life but want some change, in summary. I also work with teenagers and families. Please do read how I work and hopefully that will give you a flavour of how I coach. You can also head over to Substack (if you don't know what this is, as its a relatively new digital magazine, see below) to read more about me in a less formal environment! I am always delighted to have a free consultation where we can see if we are good fit work with me
It is true, I am a BABCP Accredited Cognitive Psychotherapist. I have worked in the mental health field for 20 years, in different capacities, but always on the front line both in the NHS and privately. In that time I have been trained in many different ways of helping. Therapy, for me at least, is looking at healing of some description and that can manifest itself in many ways in the current moment, in a mental health diagnosis, such as OCD, social anxiety, depression and so on. There is a diagnosis present that the person is seeking treatment for.
Coaching is different. For me, coaching is about growth in the current moment and into the future, about how to achieve the change you want. It is not coming from a place of diagnosis. It is a holistic approach, exploring the whole picture of who you are. This includes the way you think, problem solve, feel about things, what is important to you, the systems you exist in (for example, family and work), and the skills and strengths you have developed to date, to name but a few. It is about building an awareness of those less helpful patterns and behaviours you also have that hold you back. We can then use this new understanding and awareness to help you identify and achieve the outcomes you genuinely want. In essence, a new fundamental understanding of yourself and how you can successfully move forward towards the things you desire and want to create a meaningful life.
This is a very good question. And it is also an important question. The profession of Coaching and Therapy is not regulated. In the field of therapy only Psychiatrists and Psychologists have legally protected titles and are therefore regulated (I know this is mega confusing, please feel free to have a chat with me if this is important to you). All psychotherapists (whatever kind they are, be it CBT, psycho-dynamic and so on) counsellors and coaches are not regulated. What they can opt to do is become accredited by a body. I will talk about CBT accreditation as that is what I know best. I chose to be accredited by the BABCP so that my clients could be confident that I am properly trained, am supervised and keep my knowledge up to date. So my clients know they are ‘safe’ with me. I would do all this, even if I didn’t hold that accreditation but with it, my clients know they are in safe hands. I have worked very hard to gain this accreditation and am proud of it. The BABCP create that safety by accrediting post-graduate educational university courses in relation to appropriate training. In order to maintain my accreditation I have fulfil criteria, which I take serious, and do. I am already trained in what coaching courses offer but also in much more and in much more depth combined with 20 years of experience.

I think there is only one way. Read their website, if you feel drawn to what you have read then book a free consultation call to see if you are fit for each other.
This is quite hard to answer as to specifics of content as each session will be driven by you as a client and what you are seeking. If you read my page about how I work link then you will see how I work with clients in general terms. You can expect to have my undivided attention and thought. I will be working with you to maximise the time we have together in a meaningful way to you. I am in your corner and striving to set you up to succeed.
Payment is required prior to starting coaching. Once payment has been made we will then set up our first appointment.
I am currently offering 2 packages, one over 3 months and one over 6 months. Ideally we want to use up those sessions within the timeframe you have purchased and so I advise my clients to have their sessions once every two weeks. This gives you time to do the practice and work between sessions so that you get the most out of your coaching. I am aware that both you and I will have time off etc and so I do allow a months grace for each package. If you have not used up all your sessions after 4 or 7 months respectively then you will lose any remaining sessions of that package.
I will send you some preparation in an email once you have paid for your coaching package. It is a questionnaire that will help you to think about what you want from coaching, what you think currently gets in your way, a little bit about your background, some information about starting a coaching journal, access to my Substack and some space to think about any initial questions you have. I don’t set a time limit on this but the more thought you put in, the more you will get out of your first coaching session.
Substack an online digital magazine. That is how they describe themselves. There are many very interesting authors on there and they all have their own page. Some content is free and some behind a paywall to enable authors to be paid to write and provide great content. It is social media, but with a difference. There is no advertising (how wonderful!) and no algorithms. Each author pays Substack an amount of their subscriptions to fund the platform. It is a rich and diverse platform that I love. As authors, we can offer groups, videos, podcasts and articles. My paid subscription is £5.50 per month and you will get the paid part free for the duration of your coaching package with me. It is entirely up to you if continue as a paid member afterwards, you will not receive any pressure or a 1000 emails about it afterwards. I just want to build a helpful community there for women, so you get to test it out while having coaching with me. There are 2 group coaching sessions a month for an hour each. It is new and so I am building content as quickly as I can. Go and have a look at Substack
This is quite hard to answer as it depends what you are working towards. I would say you need at least half an hour a day and sometimes more. We will discuss this at your first coaching session and make a plan that works for your life. You are making a monetary investment in your life, and a time investment is also needed to create change.
I find that clients usually need between 3-6 months and that is why I offer both those packages. We will discuss what length you need in our consultation call.
The answer to this is yes. Research suggests that coaching, when delivered by trained professionals using evidence-based methodologies, can lead to meaningful improvements in various personal and professional domains. All of my coaching is derived from evidence bases psychological sciences and I suspect that is why it is so effective! The studies suggest that coaching can lead to significant improvements in job performance, productivity and feelings of satisfaction from work leading to positive effect on well-being, coping, resilience and focus. Research has also suggested that coaching can increase positive changes to behaviour and mental and physical health. In organisations research suggests that employee engagement improves, less absenteeism, improved team working and innovation.
No, I offer coaching delivered remotely by video, using Zoom. We are all scattered over our Island and these days geography does not limit who you can access as a coach. It is also much more convenient in our busy lives to be able to sit down in your own space, be that home or a café or your office. No longer do you have to factor in travel time, traffic and it gives you more chance to fit your coaching session in between your other commitments.
I now offer each session as 90 minutes. I find we can cover much more and overall coaching seems to be more effective with these longer sessions.
Yes. You can pay online via paypal who can set up payment plans for you directly.
Yes, yes and yes. But we are also going to learn how to set goals you can achieve! And how to take that skill into the whole of your life.
Yes you can swear, I am a well know swearer, if that is a word! We will also have serious moments, hard talking moments and we will have a lot of laughs. Research shows that using humour in therapy, as an example, helps people remember what they are thinking about, improves concentration and focus and increased memory. Fun we will have as we want all those things in coaching, eh? It is about the vagus nerve, it is rooted in science, I will write about the vagus nerve on Substack and probably a blog post here too, it’s a very important nerve!
(I don’t accept swearing at me, only for fun and expression and with me, any abuse, the call will be immediately ended).
You can email me, but please do this in a considerate manner. I may say that we will take this up in our next session or I maybe able help there and then. I answer emails during the working hours of 10.00 am to 4.00 pm, Monday to Thursday and so you won’t get a reply any other days. I don’t work at the weekends or evenings or public holidays. I will let you know when I am away on leave so you know you won’t get a reply during those periods.
Sometimes you may find you have a burning issue you really want to brain storm. That is what these calls are for. You can use them up at any point during the duration of your coaching package, they cannot be carried forward after the coaching package ends, namely either after 3 months or 6 months respectively. The call are fast paced and you will have a prompt sheet to complete in your welcome package about how they will be structured. I do ask you fill this in before the catch up call so that you are focussed. It is really good practice to use with other people to keep them focussed when they are seeking help from you too!!
No. If you feel you need therapy then please do find a therapist who is practicing as I no longer practice as a therapist. You can find a therapist via the BABCP website or via your GP or self refer to NHS Talking Therapies if you are in England.
I tend to work with teenagers, adults and parents. People who have a life they are proud of but are looking to change something or want something different, but are not sure what it is from their lives. This could be around having difficulty with confidence in relation to a promotion or moving jobs, starting a business of their own, leaving the corporate world or having difficulty with work/life balance. I also work with people in the corporate world who want to either work out if they want to leave, find a renewed passion for it or want to progress and feel stuck. I also work with people who want to leave the country and need to look at that. I work with people who find their self-confidence is not what they would like it to be, and this gets in their way, who want a space to explore what their life looks like now and what it could look like and how to get there. Some people need some help to rebuild their self-confidence after going back to work after looking after their families or for some other reason. This age can be a transitional stage in life and we all need help to confidently navigate change.
